A 5 day classroom based course usually taken in our purpose built training centre in the marina complex, A1 is the only sailing school in North Mallorca to offer a marina based classroom facility.
Covering most aspects of navigation, safety, seamanship and the use of GPS, students learn how to use a chart and plotter correctly, take bearings, plot fixes, work out courses to steer, use waypoints and recognise potential situations to avoid.
There is no previous experience required however having been on a sailing boat is a useful advantage, the RYA Dayskipper theory book is worth reading before the course.
We also offer this course back to back with the practical Dayskipper as a COMBINED COURSE, gettting the theory into practice straight away often makes it stick better and gives the student a chance to practise newly learn skills onboard a yacht.

This course is for those who have some sailing experience and now wish to take charge of a yacht themselves, ideally they should also have taken the Dayskipper theory course before hand, however this is not essential, it just makes it a little easier.
On this course we look at the decisions facing any skipper, passage planning, safety, crew welfare, using the almanac correctly, pilotage, navigation afloat, vhf radio use, radar, GPS and plotter use. All the things needed to safely sail a yacht on a day passage, we also sail for a few hours at night on this course.
We visit many different harbours during the 5 days and also practise, anchoring, mooring, emergency situations such as man overboard, manoeuvring under sail and a brief look at the engine and how it works, what spares to carry and things to check.
There is a full safety brief on this course covering all kit carried and its correct use, operation and checks required to ensure its functioning correctly.
If successful the candidate is awarded the RYA Practical Certificate, this can be used as evidence of competence to gain the ICC ( international certificate of competence ) required by most countries in Europe for all skippers.
